At Biar, we have become known throughout the world for our ability to create sampling solutions for some of the most lethal substances used in chemical processing. Chlorine is used in liquid and gaseous states to produce 93% of pharmaceutical products and 86% of crop protection chemicals used today, as well as in the production of several polymer materials such as PVC plastic. Exposure to even low concentrations of chlorine gas can cause irritation to the nose, eyes, and respiratory system. If the duration of exposure is prolonged, or concentrations increase, rapid breathing, wheezing, and hemoptysis can occur to the point of respiratory failure or cardiovascular collapse, potentially causing death. Direct contact with skin can cause local chemical or thermal burns, resulting in permanent skin and nerve damage. Chlorine also reacts strongly with several metals and is intensely corrosive when any moisture is present, ruling out many standard metals used in typical sampling valve applications.
To prevent any chemical exposure from this toxic gas, we have developed a Hastelloy C276 multi-function valve with bellows type seal, stuffing box, leak detection port, safety plug, and spring to close hand wheel that can be used in conjunction with a bayonet adapter and sampling container with dip tube. The Hastelloy material can stand up to the corrosive nature of the Chorine, while the multi-function design allows the customer to easily remove and clean the adapter with specialized tools. The bellows seal minimizes the risk of stem leakage and valve maintenance, while the stuffing box acts as a secondary containment mechanism should any issues with the bellows occur. A leak detection port allows the operator to take notice of any issue with the bellows before a leak occurs to further minimize any exposure risk. To prevent moisture from reacting with the chlorine at the valve outlet and to provide secondary containment when the valve is not in use, a safety plug is also incorporated into the valve design.
Our valves are designed with no dead space, meaning no toxic material is left in the valve after the sample is removed. In this application, a dip tube is used to provide enough vapor space to avoid overpressure from volumetric expansion of the chlorine upon entrance into the sampling vessel. Additionally, our Magic Hand Wheel, which is a spring to close actuator, prevents any chlorine from escaping if the operator’s hand leaves the valve, preventing any exposure if an accident should occur. This sampling system incorporates numerous safety features to facilitate safe sampling of one of the most toxic chemicals used in chemical processing applications.
